The Summer Works Timeline: Planning a School, TAFE or Campus Fit-Out

For schools, TAFEs and universities, the long summer break is the one window where workshops, classrooms and amenities can be refitted without disrupting students. It's also a window that closes fast. Anything that isn't installed by late January becomes a Term 1 problem.

Here's a practical timeline for planning education summer works, based on what we see from the manufacturing side at OPIE Manufacturing Group.

Why summer works fail

Most summer works that miss the deadline don't fail on site. They fail months earlier:

  • Specifications that weren't finalised until December

  • Long-lead products ordered too late

  • Manufacturers and installers closed over Christmas and New Year

  • Site access and induction requirements discovered at the last minute

Better planning fixes all of these.

The timeline

August–September: scope and budget

Confirm what's being replaced and why. Walk the spaces with the people who use them: trade teachers, lab technicians, IT staff, cleaners. Lock in the budget and approval path.

October: specify and order

This is the critical month. Turn the scope into specifications and get orders placed. Online configurators can save weeks here. You can build and price a Boscotek workbench and storage layout, Bosco office storage, a Lectrum lectern or Gilkon ceramic steel whiteboards yourself in the OPIE configurator, and take a PDF quote straight to approval.

November: confirm deliveries and site access

Confirm delivery dates in writing. Book installers. Sort out site inductions, parking, lift access and after-hours access before the school office closes. Check the manufacturer's Christmas shutdown dates and last-order cut-offs.

December–January: install

Deliver in sequence: build and rough-in works first, then fixed items such as fountains, basins and wall mounts, then furniture and storage, then AV. Leave a buffer week for the unexpected.

Late January: commissioning and handover

Test everything: drawer locks, display lifts, drinking-fountain flow, data points. Hand over documentation and warranty details, and walk the users through anything new.

What one manufacturer can cover

Many education fit-outs need products from several categories. Through our brands, OPIE Manufacturing Group makes:

  • Trade and engineering workshops: Boscotek industrial workbenches, high-density drawer cabinets, mobile tool storage and cupboards, all designed as one modular system. Wintec's Engineering and Trades Facility in New Zealand is a good example (case study).

  • Classrooms and lecture theatres: Gilkon mobile display stands, wall mounts, ceiling posts and ceramic steel whiteboards.

  • Comms rooms: Argent network racks, open-frame racks and wall-mounted cabinets.

  • Amenities and grounds: SMC Stainless drinking fountains, wash troughs, basins and grab rails.

All of these are made at our Emu Heights facility in Western Sydney, under one ISO 9001 quality system. That simplifies coordination, delivery and after-sales support.

Five tips from the factory floor

  1. Measure twice, especially doorways. A full-height cabinet that won't fit through the workshop door is a common and avoidable problem.

  2. Ask for the load rating in writing. Trade benches and drawers take real punishment. Specify UDL and drawer ratings rather than vague descriptions like "heavy duty".

  3. Specify compliance up front. For drinking fountains and accessible fixtures, call up the relevant AS 1428 requirements in the brief.

  4. Think about security. Mobile displays and projectors walk. Lockable mounts and projector security cages are cheaper than replacements.

  5. Plan for growth. Modular storage and racking let you add capacity next year without starting again.

Frequently asked questions

How early should we order for a December install? As early as possible, and ideally in October. Lead times vary by product and volume, so confirm them with us when you order.

Can you deliver before the site is ready? Talk to us about staging. Holding stock until the site is ready is often better than delivering into a construction zone where products can be damaged.

Do you install, or just deliver? Boscotek offers nationwide installation. For other brands and mixed fit-outs, ask us what's possible for your location.

Can we mix products from different brands in one order? Yes. Because Boscotek, Gilkon, Argent and SMC Stainless are all made at Emu Heights, a single conversation can cover workshops, classrooms, comms rooms and amenities.
