Seven Questions Defence Buyers Should Ask an Australian Fabrication Partner

Defence manufacturing in Australia is about more than making a part to drawing. Components have to be made consistently, documented thoroughly and delivered on schedule, often for platforms that will stay in service for decades. Picking the wrong fabrication partner can cost a program time, money and capability.

Here are seven questions we think every defence buyer should ask a potential Australian fabrication partner, and how OPIE Manufacturing Group answers them.

Why supplier selection matters more in defence

Defence parts often have long service lives, strict material and process requirements and little tolerance for substitution. A supplier that closes, outsources without telling you or can't reproduce a part years later becomes a sustainment risk. Sovereign capability is only as strong as the weakest supplier in the chain.

1. Where exactly will it be made?

"Australian-made" can mean different things. Ask for the street address of every process: cutting, forming, welding, machining, finishing and assembly.

Our answer: one facility at 109 Russell Street, Emu Heights, in Western Sydney.

2. What's in-house and what's outsourced?

Every subcontracted process is another supplier your program depends on, and another one to audit.

Our answer: fibre laser and tube laser cutting, CNC press brakes and panel bending, robotic laser welding, TIG/MIG/CMT welding, CNC milling and turning, spot welding, laser marking, powder coating and mechanical assembly are all done in-house. See the full list of services.

3. What quality system are you working to?

Ask for certificates, their scope and the certifying body.

Our answer: we operate an ISO-certified quality environment, with ISO 9001 certification issued through BSI. Our processes are designed for traceability, with documentation available to suit program requirements.

4. Are you registered where we look for suppliers?

Many primes use supplier registers to pre-qualify vendors.

Our answer: OPIE Manufacturing Group Pty Ltd is registered on JOSCAR-AU.

5. Can you support engineering, not just production?

The best savings in defence manufacturing are usually made before production starts.

Our answer: our engineering team offers CAD modelling, design for manufacture, prototype development, materials selection, reverse engineering and manufacturing documentation. High-accuracy 3D scanning lets us reproduce legacy parts when drawings no longer exist, which matters for ageing fleets.

6. Can you scale from prototype to production?

A supplier that can make one perfect prototype isn't automatically able to make 500 consistent parts.

Our answer: our TRUMPF TruLaser Weld 5000 robotic laser welding cell, automated tube lasers and CNC press brakes are built for repeatability, and prototypes are made on the same equipment as production. Typical defence-related applications include vehicle components, equipment enclosures, communications and electronic housings, ground support equipment, storage systems, brackets and mounting systems, protective covers and structural assemblies.

7. Will you still be here in ten years?

Sustainment depends on supplier continuity.

Our answer: we've been manufacturing since 1962 and are now in our fourth generation of family ownership. We keep investing in equipment and skills because we plan to be here for the next 60 years too.

How OPIE answers, in short

  • Sovereign: made in Western Sydney, under one roof
  • Capable: precision sheet metal, structural steelwork, robotic laser welding, machining and protective finishing
  • Documented: an ISO-certified quality environment and JOSCAR-AU registration
  • Supported: in-house engineering from concept to production
  • Proven: our brands supply secure and mission-critical environments. Argent's SCEC-endorsed security racks are made here, and Argent racks were adapted for CSIRO's Mobile Mission Operations Centre.

Through our Boscotek brand, which is Defence Approved , we also make workshop storage for defence environments, and SMC Stainless makes security fixtures for custodial and secure facilities.
